Waypoint completes the CitiPower Centre at Junction Oval

Waypoint is excited to announce the completion of the CitiPower Centre at Junction Oval. The centre officially opened 3 March 2018 and was almost eight years in the making. It is a resounding achievement for Victorian cricket in which challenging funding obstacles were overcome to deliver a first-class administrative, training and international competition facility.

Waypoint’s involvement in the development includes master planning, project direction and securing multi-partner funding. Much needed support was gained from local stakeholders in a very high profile public parkland precinct. The Labor Government proudly delivered $25 million towards the $40 million project total. Achieving multi-party funding is a long-game but worth the perseverance to avoid project abandonment; the common fate of many sports facility projects.

The CitiPower Centre is the new administrative headquarters and training facility for Cricket Victoria, the Melbourne Stars and the Melbourne Renegades. Players have access to high performance facilities, an indoor centre as well as medical and rehabilitation spaces. Cricket Australia chief executive officer, James Sutherland is thrilled with the result, “This centre is so much more than a cricket ground. It is a state-of-the-art cricket facility without peer. We can only wish that every state and territory had a facility like this.”

The complex can be used for cricket all year round, with the field expected to host Sheffield Shield, Women’s National Cricket League, Women’s Big Bash League and Premier Cricket. The upgrade has secured group games for the women’s ICC World T20 in 2020.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

It will service our elite players, our fans and the community at-large. We are dedicated to being a sport for all and this new building will help us deliver on that goal.” Tony Dodemaide - Chief Executive Officer, Cricket Victoria .

Waypoint are extremely privileged to be part of the team involved in this impressive achievement for cricket in Victoria and for the local Port Phillip community.
