Lighting up Simonds Stadium
The first night AFL game in Geelong is much closer with all four light towers having now been installed at Simonds Stadium. The first night game will take place on Saturday 1st June when the Cats tackle the Gold Coast Suns.
“Today is a significant step as we move toward our first ever night AFL football game at Simonds Stadium,” Geelong Acting Chief Executive Rob Threlfall said.
“Our supporters and members are excited about what lies ahead with the advent of night football here at Simonds Stadium.”
The Geelong Football Club will be playing for premiership points under lights at Simonds Stadium for the first time in over 62 years, with all 623 of the clubs games at the venue being held during daylight hours.
The light towers will not only see AFL football played in Geelong at night, they will also provide broadcast quality lighting for other sporting & community events including cricket (T20), soccer, rugby league and rugby union.
Funding for the lights was through a $10 million contribution from the Australian Government’s Regional Development Australia Fund (RDAF). Waypoint were responsible for putting together the successful RDAF application, as well as acting as Geelong Football Club’s representative throughout the project.
